Open Learning - development

Definition

A radically different conception of open learning from that of dissemination ... is one which emphasizes the development of the whole person and their ability to construct meaning in and through their lives. ... When conceived of as development, open learning is a matter of removing the constraints on a learner of being directed to learn about particular subject matter and to study in a particular way. Instead, the curriculum is open, individuals are encouraged to take on the responsibility for the direction and content of their own learning and for the processes of learning. The individual will have to learn how to learn ... and to work with and through emotional pain and discomfort.... (Hodgson et al, 1987, p. 166).
