DESCRIPTION OF INNOVATION:French Exploration of the Australian Coast - video explaining the origin of French names on the Australian coast and illustrating how a French Australia, or partly French, with two languages like Canada might have happened. REASONS FOR DEVELOPMENT/INTRODUCTION OF THE INNOVATION:Perceived need to inform UWA students of French about the French exploration of particularly Western Australian during 18-19th centuries, with the result that we have many French names on this coast. USE:Videos (French & English version) on above topic used in class, French one for second year students, English version for Introductory course. Then follow-up work to consolidate new language and vocab. which is introduced by French curator and archivist interviewed in video It is stand-alone, and is presently being marketed within universities and schools and libraries in Australia and overseas. It can also be used in High school French classes (French version) or in Primary schools or for Social studies classes (English version). STUDENT SUPPORT:It is introduced in class with a script for the Second year class (for the French version) then follow-up assignments oblige students to use the script as a reference. With the first year group it is part of the cultural component of the course. ASSESSMENT:As mentioned above, following assignments are then assessed as part of the assessment component of the 2nd year course. EVALUATION:Personal feedback is positive - no evaluation sheets yet destributed. EFFECTIVENESS:Students seem very interested and intrigued to find out this part of Australian history not mentioned in most history books. It also explains the hitherto mysterious French names on the coast. HINDRANCES TO DEVELOPING INNOVATION:Changes in provision of media services. ENABLERS TO DEVELOPING INNOVATION:Technical advice. COST/BENEFITS:Immeasurable amounts of time, ingenuity and energy were required, e.g. travelling all around France for photographic materials, visiting museums and archives for interviews and to track maps, charts etc... Husband did photography and videography while in France and many colleagues participated in dubbing the English version. Without the UWA study leave funding, the task would have been impossible. Also difficult to calculate cost in (wo)man hours! But worth it from viewpoints of professional satisfaction and interest, both my own and students'. LESSONS LEARNT:Importance of sustained technical support. |
ContributorsThe following staff have been active in developing teaching and learning technology for use with students at this university. They are not necessarily all 'experts' in the use of technology but are prepared to provide incidental advice to others, drawing on their practical experiences in developing teaching and learning materials
